Those who know me also know that I do not care much for commercial aspects of Christian Holidays (Which I think are Holy Days, not stuff yourself days).
In fact I loathe the abundance of Easter Bunnies, Easter eggs, Christmas decorations, lanterns, shops full of colourful wrapping paper, fluffy rabbit toys or evening dresses, suits and costumes with no end to it!
I really don’t mind a Christmas tree in the house or lovely food on the table with Easter, I am not at all barmey -I have my family’s wishes to consider-, but if all that is really necessary to make the right atmosphere without focussing on the true meaning of those days I rather sit in a corner and mope. In The Netherlands Christmas is the Christian feast which we put the most emphasis on, In England it is Easter I think. But in both countries, if you go outside shopping, there is hardly a glimpse of Jesus to be seen. No crosses in shop windows, no open Bibles, oh yes, a nativity scene ok, but no explanation about where to put that in the whole story, fun on itself.
And with Easter it is just like that too, everywhere you look it’s about colouring eggs, all kinds of yellow decoration, Easter Bunnies in shops and hopping around outside handing out chocolate eggs. Again, I don’t mind all that (especially chocolate) except when there is nothing to be seen of the true meaning of those Holy Days. I am convinced God didn’t want us to be moping in a corner without food on the table, colourful lights or good music but it is good to think about this and get away from all that commercial stuff and escape for a while and just think.
So, with all that lovely food on the table, the wonderful music to listen to, and yes maybe an Easter decoration here and there, it might be a good idea to tell the world what it is really all about: The Great Escape. Jesus died for our sins on the cross, simple as that. But a miracle just as wonderful as that: He rose from the grave after three days and escaped from an empty tomb. Christ is risen, Hallelujah! After three days enduring the punishment we should’ve got instead of Him He made his Great Escape from death and became alive again.
And I feel we sometimes have to be told to escape with Him from all this abundance of food, lights, decorations, from our old lives and sin and just sit in a corner and think of Him. But without the moping of course. Happy Easter, celebrate, forJesus Christ is risen today!
